William Benjamin Piland was born February 27, 1875, and died November 28, 1963. He was better known as "Pomp". He was born about two miles from Gatesville, N. C., and lived in Gates County all his life. He married Alice Piland on April 12, 1899, and in his early married life they moved to the "Camp Ground", and had a family of ten children. His strength exceeded that of the average man and he used it doing hand work, such as ditching, cleaning new grounds, and cutting wood with an ax. After retiring from farming, he enjoyed sports. He did a lot of fishing, deer hunting, and watching baseball on television. He loved people and especially children. Most of the grandchildren called him "Pop". He was a member of Harrell's Methodist Church. He enjoyed good health most of his lfie and died of a heart attack at the home of his son, Hollis, in the Middle Swamp section of Gates County, N. C., at the age of eighty-eight. He was buried at the Lawrence Burial Ground in Gates County, N. C. |
