Shared note	Elijah was born May 22, 1865 and died June 8, 1895. He was the third son of George Washington and Harriett Lawrence Piland. He was born and lived in Gates County, N. C., with his family on a farm until he became a young man. His first job away from home was in a blacksmith shop with his brother, Robert, at Buckhorn, Va. In January of 1892, he was married to Barbara Ann Holland and lived on a farm near Holland, Va., where he was a member of the Holland Christian Church. Two years later they purchased a farm in Gates County and moved there. The pleasure of owning and caring for his own land was short. In June of the same year Elijah died of a severe case of pneumonia, leaving his young wife and two small daughters, Harriett Ann, age 2 1/2 years, and Mary Elizabeth, age 10 months. Quoting from a newspaper clipping which has been kept through the years by his wife and daughter, we find this tribute: "Bro. Piland was regular in his church attendance and was ever ready to serve Christ and His cause whenever duty called. He was highly esteemed by his brethren and will be held in sacred remembrance."
