Shared note	In October of 1996, wife Shirley, son Chris and I visited a friend on the outer banks of North Carolina who took us down to Ocracoke where we found Michael Piland's grave in the Howard cemetery. Maggie J Farrow, born May 1878, daughter-in-law, living with Mike and Lucretia in 1900. Two granddaughters living with family in 1910: Edna Piland, born NC 1896, and Mary Piland, born NC 1898. From "History of the Piland Family", an unpublished manuscript: Michael Lawrence Piland was born in Gates County, near Gatesville, N. C., on January 20, 1861. He died on May 6, 1920, with pneumonia. He grew up on the farm where he was born and early in life showed a talent for selling merchandise. It was during the era when it was customary to see people with this talent of salesmanship put to use by traveling through the country, house to house, with a wagon loaded with such items that most any home owner might use, in and around the home. So it was on one of his trips to the town of Little Washington, N. C., where he met his future wife, Lucretia Wahab Farrow. She was a widow with 3 girls and 1 boy. Lucretia's former husband had operated a general merchandise store over on Ocracoke Island, N. C., when he died. The widow, having to struggle along trying to carry on the business and attend to house keeping, was about to sell out. So Michael and Lucretia decided to get married and continue operating the store with Michael as manager. The business was successful. This couple was not blessed with any children. Michael made many friends while he lived on Ocracoke Island, in fact the following poem probably expressed his feeling for staying there until he died. Michael was buried in the Howard Cemetery on Ocracoke Island. "If you want to rest In peace and quiet, Here's the place For you to try it. Forget your cares Your worries, too, And just relax, The whole day through. It makes no difference If you are rich or broke You'll enjoy your rest. At Ocracoke."
