Lucy Jane Piland was born on June 25, 1871, in Gates County, North Carolina. She married Christopher Columbus Holland February 13, 1890. To them were born seven children. She died June 7, 1937, and was buried in Holy Neck Church Cemetery near Holland, Virginia. Lucy being the oldest daughter, it fell her lot to look after the family after her mother's death in 1884. A girl of only 13 years of age at the time, she spent many tiresome hours washing, cooking and cleaning for a large family. The others helped what they could, but she felt the responsibility of caring for the family as the next oldest girl was only 11. Lucy was the middle child - six children older which were all boys and six children younger. The baby, Amos, was not at home, as he was put in Peggy Lawrence's home to be cared for after his mother's death. We are not certain how many of the older boys were at home during this time. At the age of 19, Lucy started housekeeping for only two, for at this time she married and moved to Nansemond County near Holland, Virginia. Here she and "Lum", as he was better known, lived. They bought a farm near Holy Neck Church where they lived until death. The family became active members of the Holy Neck Christian Church. |
