Harriet Ann Piland was born January 6, 1880, the eleventh child of George W. and Harriet Piland. She was four when her mother died. Hattie came to Suffolk to live with her brother, Bob. She found employment at the Butter Dish Factory and this is where she met Porter Boone. He was from Jackson, N. C. They met in March and got married January 15, 1902. They were married at Bob Piland's house with Dr. W. W. Staley officiating. The newly weds left for Jackson where they made their home. They stayed in Jackson from 1902 until 1918, with their first six children being born there. Porter had a desire to return to Virginia to live, so they bought the house at Bethlehem. Their seventh chld was born here. Porter died January 5, 1950, and left Hattie to visit with all her children. Hattie was always a good cook. She was famous for good biscuits and home-made ice cream. She has always given of herself to her family and neighbors. Anyone needing help night or day could depend on her. She is known for her serene ways. Her motto has been, "If you don't take care of yourself, don't expect others to do it". There must be something to this for Hattie is the last living child of George Washington Piland. |
