Shared note	Charles Amos Piland was born October 3, 1884, in Gates County, N. C. He married Penelope Holland, February 25, 1906. To them were born four children. He died September 9, 1940, and was buried in Holland Cemetery, Holland, Va. Amos' mother died when he was only eighteen days old. He then lived with his step-grandmother, Peggy Lawrence. He had not been named at the time of his mother's death, so he was named Charles Amos after the pastor who conducted his mother's funeral. At the age of about twelve, his step-grandmother died. He then lived with Peggy's step-son, Charlie Lawrence, until he married. Amos and Penelope - "Penny" as she was better known - spent the first three years of their married life in Gates County, N. C. Then they moved to Holland Community, Nansemond County, Virginia. He bought a farm about two and one-half miles of Holy Neck Church.
