Shared note	Robert Starkey, better known as Bob, was next to the oldest child of George Washington and Harriett Lawrence Piland. Born in Gatesville, N. C., on September 5, 1863, he served time as apprentice carriage blacksmith in his early years. He was married to Mary Frances Duke on March 28, 1886, and became the father of seven children. He moved to Buckhorn, Va., and opened his own general repair shop in 1887. In 1891, he moved to Suffolk, Va., and worked as general repairman in a blacksmith shop about 30 years. He then went to work in the shop of the Norfolk-Carolina Railroad for some time. His last place of employment was with Lilliston Harvester Co. When the business moved to Albany, Ga., he went with them until his retirement in 1925. After his retirement, he moved to Suffolk, Va., and made his home with his oldest son, Oscar, until his death, November 21, 1952. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, Va.
