Pylant Geneology

Henry Quinton Piland was born June 24, 1868 in Gates County, N. C. He married Mary Elisa Pearce, better known as "Mollie" about 1890. To them were born ten children. He died April 18, 1942. He is buried in Uzzell's Church Cemetery, Isle of Wight County, Virginia, along with his wife, three children and a grandchild. For several years after their marriage, Quinton and Mollie lived in Gates County near Gatesville, N. C. Here they farmed and had five children born to them. In 1904, on a very wintry day, Quinton and Mollie with their five children moved to Isle of Wight County, near Smithfield, Virginia. They moved their family in a surry with four children in the back seat and baby Gladys in its mother's lap. With sleet and ice everywhere, the family had to use plenty of quilts to keep them warm. After arriving at their home in Virginia, the baby had to be admitted to the hospital due to exposure. Quinton, after a few years in Virginia, bought a farm not far from Uzzell's Church and lived until after his wife's death and he remarried. After coming to Virginia five more children were born to them. He and his family attended Uzzell's Church and became faithful members. Mollie became a teacher in the Sunday School and Quinton a member of the choir -- singing bass. Quinton loved outdoor life. He was fond of hunting and fishing. He kept rabbit dogs which he hunted with often and he loved fox hunting. Fishing he didn't do as much of as hunting, but occasionally when he did go he would fish all day. Quinton and Mollie had much sickness and death in their family. During the "flu" epidemic of 1919, they lost two children within three days. They lost one previous to this and four years later another one died. Some of the others before their adult life were seriously ill and not expected to live. With all the sickness and doctor's bills, Quinton and Mollie had a struggle raising their family. Then on September 30, 1930, he lost his faithful wife. The year after his wife's death he lived alone. The following year his daughter, Gladys, and family lived with him. In August of this year (1932), he married a widow lady in the community, Pattie Presson Almond. She was a faithful wife, mother and grandmother to Quinton's family. At the end of the year, 1932, they moved to his wife's home. Here he lived until he became ill and was admitted to a hospital where he died.
