George Washington Piland was born November 13, 1835 and died in 1898. He met and married Harriett Lawrence on February 7, 1860. She was born March 28, 1842 and died October 21, 1884. They lived on a farm near Gatesville in Gates County, N.C., and raised a family of 13 children. Harriett died when Amos, her 13th child, was very young. This left George with a house full of children to care for. This must have been a big responsibility for a man in those days. He married Mattie Parker on July 23, 1885. It has been said, "Mattie must have been a remarkable woman to be able to go in a home of 13 children." She must have won their love because she was "Mama" to them. George Washington Piland was buried at the Wade's Place in Gates County near Gatesville, N. C., and Harriett Lawrence Piland was buried in the Lawrence burial ground in Gates County, N. C.
