Family note written by Felix Grundy Gibson Pylant and provided by his granddaughter, Mrs. Gelene Pylant Newhouse.
"Some of the Pylant cousins: Marion Pylant's father (John Pylant) first married a Jones and she had four children: Guilford, Pinkney, John, and Betsy. His last wife, the widow Hilliard, was Marion's mother. She had three children before she married Marion's father and one of them married James Crawford and moved to Arkansas. Grandfather (John Pylant) had by his last wife: James, William, Cimbrel (? Kimbrel), Robert, and Marion. Marion was his youngest son - light complected, rather chunky made, and while young was quite a talker. After his mother's death he stayed with Pinkney Pylant until his cousin Bennett Pylant (Joseph Bennett Pyland) moved to Missouri and he went with him. The last heard from him, he had settled down and professed religion and was an officer in the church. Marion's father was my grandfather. I have no doubt the Pylants west are relatives of the Pylants in Tennessee. The old stock here came from North Carolina. Some signed their names with a D to the last and some with a T, even brothers differed in this respect.

According to a letter written by Frank's son, James E. Pylant, in 1895, Frank was captured by the southern Indians in 1863 near Fort Smith, Arkansas and was killed along with 140 other pioneers. This story has yet to be verified.

Info from Civil War website:
Pylant, Frank; private, enlisted 1 May 1863 at Van Buren, Arkansas. AWOL 10 Oct 1863.
