From "The History of Coosa County, Alabama" by the Rev. George E. Brewer: JOHN A. PYLANT
No man was better known in Coosa who was not long in office than John A. Pylant. He was a native of Tennessee, and moved to Coosa about 1840. He bought the home of James Lindsey, now occupied by Jasper McAdory, and lived there till removed to Central Institute about 1856. From the Institute he went to Wetumpka, engaging in mercantile pursuits until about 1871 or 1872, when he went to Texas where most of his children had preceded him. His wife was a sister or near kinswoman of Mrs. Lindsey, and was long and widely known as "Aunt Mary Pylant," noted for her good table, and especially her fine coffee. Pylant was a successful farmer and had a good orchard. He entertained a great deal of company in such good style, as to invite the people to share it. He and Guy Smith (known as Uncle Guy) were for years staunch pillars in Poplar Springs Church, and next to the preachers in usefulness to the Association. He was fond of vocal music, and one of the most read and best choristers of the whole country. He filled the place of chorister for his church, the Association, and of almost all religious gatherings he attended. He was the best missionary colporteur ever employed by the Association. He was charitable to the poor - ready to help anyone in need - and very liberal in the support of all church work. His contributions to the Central Institute were liberal, and he was one of its trustees during its ownership by the denomination.

Abstracted Newspapers of Elmore County, Alabama (1870-1880):
The Elmore Republican, Friday, August 15, 1873: A striking instance of the uncertainty of life's duration, and the unknown proximity of death, has this week been presented in the unexpected demise of our young friend, Abner Melton, son of Mrs. Mary E. Melton, of this place, who died on Tuesday about 9 o'clock a.m. Mr. Melton had been running in some capacity on a railroad between Nashville and St. Louis, we believe it was, and in St. Louis the latter part of July had an attack of cholera. On convalescing, he came down here to see his relatives and friends. Last Monday we met him on the street, when in conversation, he gave us the foregoing facts. The evening of the same day, he rode horseback up to Central Institute to see some friends. The next morning, he procured a buggy and in the company of a young lady, who resides here, started home; but becoming quite sick, they turned back to the Institute, before reaching which they got a considerable wetting from a sudden shower. On reaching the Institute, being in great pain, Jno. A. Pylant, who has had great experience in administering all ordinary medicines, gave him a dose of morphine and a runner was sent after Dr. Patterson, the nearest physician. We learn that on his arrival, he administered cholera remedy freely, but Mr. Melton died in spite of every effort, with every symptom of a colapse state of cholera. His body was brought down here the following morning and the funeral sermon was preached in the afternoon, in the Methodist Church, by the Rev. P. H. Lightfoot, after which the body was interred by the Independent Order of the Good Templars of Wetumpka Lodge No. 103, of which he was a member.
