General Affidavit - State of Illinois, County of Hardin, SS: In the matter of Pension claim No. 489,247, of George W. Piland, alias George W. Willis, Co. "B" 1st Wis. Cav. Vols. Personally appeared before me, Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Joseph B. Piland aged 36 years, a resident of ____ in the County of Crittenden and State of Kentucky whose Post Office address is Elizabethtown, Illinois ..... well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: "I am personally acquainted with the claimant, he being my brother. I know that the claimant is the identical person who served in Co. "B" 1st Wis. Cav. Vols. under the name of George W. Willis, for the following reasons: I know that my father received letters from him while in the army, under the name of George W. Willis, and sent letters to him addressed to "George W. Willis, Co. "B" 1st Wis. Cav.". I remember, also, that father received many from claimant, by express, during his service. On claimant's return home from the army, he told affiant that his reason for enlisting under an assumed name was because he was under age and his father was not willing for him to enlist, and that he was afraid his father might find out where he was and take him out if he enlisted under his true name. I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in its presecution." Signed: Joseph B. Piland

Obituary: (Eldorado Daily Journal, 21 Nov 1927)
George W. Piland, aged 83, a civil war veteran of this city, passed away at his home on Mathis avenue, at eight o'clock Sunday morning. He had been in failing health for some time with a complication of diseases and quietly fell asleep in the early hours of the Sabbath morning.

Mr. Piland for may years was a successful farmer, but when his failing health and advanced age caused him to give up active work, he retired from the farm and has lived in this city for some time.

He is survived by his wife and a number of sons and daughters as follows: Mrs. S. H. Wilson and Mrs. Sophia Cletcher of this city, F. M. Piland of Harrisburg, C. J. Piland of Port Arthur, Texas, Mrs. Theodore Radke of St. Joseph, Mich., Joe Piland of Crossville, E. G. Piland of Piggott, Ark., Clifford Piland of East St. Louis and Mrs. Robert Gates of Greenway, Ark. Two brothers also survive, Joe Piland of Elizabethtown and Jerry Piland of Kentucky.

Funeral services were to be held at two o'clock this afternoon at Cottage Grove church with burial in the cemetery there.
