Piland, 86, resident of 512 North Main street, Harrisburg, died at 5:30 a.m. today (26 Aug 1959) in the Lightner hospital following a long illness, the last month of which was spent in the hospital. He had lived in Harrisburg for more than 75 years, having been a hoisting engineer for the O'Gara coal company and in the machine shop of the Sahara Coal company until his retirement about six years ago due to ill health. He was born Sept. 1, 1872, and was the son of the late George and Susanna Barnes Piland. He is survived by his wife, Ida Mae, his son, Frank Piland, Lake Charles, La.; his daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Dickerson, Astoria; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two step-children, George Gulledge, Palmira, and Floyd Gulledge, St. Louis; his brother, Elijah Piland, Piggott, Ark., and his sisters, Mrs. Robert Gates, Gideon, Mo., and Mrs. Anne Radke, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Mr. Piland was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic lodge in Harrisburg. The body will lie in state in the chapel of the Harrisburg funeral home until the funeral at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church. Rev. Otho Williams will officiate, assisted by Rev. R. J. Morman, and burial will be in the Camp Ground cemetery near Galatia.
