"Mills Piland, born 1799 in North Carolina, and Pamina, born 1797, North Carolina, were the parents of George Piland, born 1834, North Carolina. His wife Sarah was born 1834, in Alabama. George and Sarah's son was William R. Piland, born 1856, died 1925 in Texas, and was married to Nancy Alabama Kuykendall, born 17 Feb 1857, and died 1939 in Texas. Their son, Virgil Lafayette Piland, born 3 August 187_, Montague, Texas and died 25 Sept 1972 was married to Mary Ellen Dixon on 11 Aug 190_. She was born 2 Jan 1884. They had ten children
"Ruby Lee, born 27 Oct 1902, married Bluford Golden 16 April 1922. Ruby Lee died 23 Nov 1974. Rosia Mae, born 11 July 1904, married Walter Ray Tucker 8 Nov 1926. Charles Henry, born 4 Aug 1906, died 7 Sept 1941, was married to Mona Dell Followill. Millard Greenwood was born 26 Dec 1908. Lillie Pauline Elizabeth, born 5 Dec 1910, married (1) Jasper Hokett (2) Robert E. Fox, 20 Dec 1953. Ann Lucille, born 19 Jan 1913, married (1) Raymond Mitchell Hardin (2) Dub Miller. William Luther, born 20 June 1915, married Mary Followill. Vergie Cecille, born 22 July 1917, married Homer S. Turpin, 13 April 1941. Clara Fern, born 11 March 1922, married Fred Nelson Hubbard. James Lafayette, born 20 Aug 1925, married Nancy Kearns.
"The Pilands settled on Burger Creek on a farm where he was famous for Tom Watson melons and a pecan orchard. In 1930 the family moved to Weatherford where Piland took up brick masonry. He worked with the late Douglas Chandor who created Chandor Gardens.
"Virgil Piland used to laugh when he had to park in front of a parking meter and drop a coin in. He told of how he used to tie his horse and mules to posts around the courthouse where he sold his produce and watermelons. The couple really used to laugh and say the town had been sliced off to make room for all the cars. There is hardly any room for the horses and mules at rodeo time. Piland was a charter member of the Phoenix Masonic Lodge #275 of Weatherford and Woodman of the World. Mr. Piland was a member of the Woodman Circle. They were engaged in farming for many years and he later worked for Ray Brothers Construction.
"Mrs. Piland vividly recalled the mule-drawn street cars, the horse-drawn hearses in funeral processions and bodies hauled in horse-drawn farm wagons.
"The Pilands had hosts of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. They were member of Eure Baptist Church. The Pilands celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on August 6, 1972. Mrs. Piland was the daughter of the late Samuel F. Dixon and Martha Elizabeth Wright Dixon."
