MEXICAN WAR PENSION DECLARATION OF SURVIVOR FOR PENSION State of Texas County of Ellis On this 19th day of November, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven, personally appeared before me, Elijah H. Piland, a resident of Greenville, in the county of Hunt, in the State of Texas, who, being by me first duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: I am the identical Elijah H. Piland, who served under the name of Elijah H. Piland (or E. H. Piland), as a 1st Corporal in the company commanded by Captain Thomas I. Smith, in the regiment of Texas Volunteers (or Rangers) commanded by P. H. Bell, in the war with Mexico; that I enlisted at San Antonio, on or about the ___ day of August A. D. 1846, for the term of 12 months, and was honorably discharged at Smith's Station, on the ___ day of August A.D. 1847. That being duly enlisted, as aforesaid, I actually served sixty days with the Army or Navy of the United States in Mexico, or on the coast or frontier thereof, or en route thereto, in the war with that Nation, which service was as follows: marched to Comorgo and reported to General Taylor and into the interior to Savalvo - in Mexico - thence back to Texas frontier and ____ until discharged. (a) That I am 63 years of age, having been born in Perquimans County, North Carolina on the 15th day of August, 1824. That I am now married; that the maiden name of my wife was Margaret Walls, to whom I was married at Hunt County, in the State of Texas, on the ____ day of October, A. D. 1870; that my wife is now seventy. That the name of my present wife is Margaret Piland. That since my discharge from said service I have resided as follows: at or near Greenville in Hunt county, Texas. signed: E. H. Piland

 "Elijah was the second son.  He was born in NC in 1824 and came with the family to Texas in 1839 at age 15.  Like his older brother, he also received a grant of 320 acres and was recorded separately from the family in the 1840 census.  However, sometime between 1840 and 1860, he returned to his father's home.  There is a land transaction by Elijah in 1846.  The 1860 census records him as a dentist, consequently, we may conjecture that he gave up farming, sold his land, and concentrated on dentistry. "Between 1860 and 1880, Elijah married a Mary, or Margaret, born in 1850, and had a child, born in 1878, named Andrew J.  During this period he also moved to Hunt County, Texas.  No members of the family appear in the 1900 census, but son Andrew J. appears in the 1910 census, with the name spelled 'Pyland'.  His age at this time is 33 and he is married to Myrtle, age 23.  They have a daughter, Maureen, age 4.  At this time they were living in Denton County, Texas."  (Written by Robert Owens Piland)
