SYLVIA PYLAND WRECK VICTIM
Body of Former Pope County Girl Sent Here
Miss Sylvia Pyland, 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Pyland of Gary, Indiana, who was killled in an automobile accident at Gary last Thursday evening, was brought to this county for burial at the Hazel Cemetery at Dixon Springs, Sunday.
Miss Pyland was riding in a car with five other young people when the accident occurred, and she was the only one killed. The other occupants of the car received minor injuries.
The young persons had gone by the Pyland home to get Sylvia to go to a beach near Gary for a Beach Party. There were six of them in a Ford roadster, Miss Pyland being in the middle in the front seat. The driver of the roadster ran through a stop light at high speed, it is said, and collided with a car on the opposite side of the stop sign, turning his car over about three times. All of the occupants except Miss Pyland were thrown clear of the rolling car which rolled over on Sylvia, crushing her head and body very badly. She was kill instantly.
The Pylands are relatives of the Bateys of Golconda, Mrs. Pyland being a sister of Mr. Will Batey.
Sylvia was born and reared in this community and attended school at the Golconda school until the family moved to Gary, Ind.
The young woman is survived by her parents and four sisters. Mrs. Edith May of Simpson is one of the sisters, and the other three are: Mrs. Hazel Sanders of East Chicago, Mrs. Nina Morgan and Mrs. Mollie Dixon, of Gary, Ind. Besides the family there are several aunts, uncles and cousins who mourn the untimely death of the girl, along with scores of friends both here and at Gary.
