(Avinger, Texas, USA - Fred McKenzie) The same Baby George, when a teenager, had been the cause, more or less, of another unfortunate white-black confrontation that resulted in his late father, Clayton McDaniel, getting his left leg shot off just above the knee. The incident happened several years before the John Avinger flimflamming when father and son were employed by Ercel Pyland in his logging business. Baby George, it seems, had been negligent in some of his duties and boss, Ercel, took it upon himself to chastise the boy in a fatherly way - which might not have been so bad except that he wasn't his father. Clayton, the boy's real father, took issue over what had happened and went looking for his and his son's boss. When Mr. Pyland saw Clayton "coming at him", as he put it, his normal reaction, he felt, was to protect himself, which he did with a shotgun blast aimed at Clayton's left leg. Once having stopped his adversary, the white boss performed the normal, humane act of quickly loading him in his pick-up truck and rushing him to the nearest hospital for proper medical attention. All of the injured man's medical expenses were taken care of by his employer, through company insurance and otherwise, to the extent of outfitting him with a workable artificial leg. When fully recovered, Clayton returned to work for the same employer and as far as I ever knew, seemed to harbor no bitterness toward him. All parties involved appeared to forgive and forget and then go on with their normal lives.
