Information provided by Bonnie Lewis Carroll: Carrie Mae left Oak Grove, Bowie county, Texas with her mother at the age of 5 years. They came to Grassburr, Oklahoma (3 miles south of Leon, Love county, Oklahoma) in the bend of Red River where they lived with uncle Hamp Mapp who was at the time farming Indian land. This land was later to be owned by my wife Delorah's granddad Joe Basinger and was where both Delorah's mother and Delorah herself were born. My mother Carrie was the youngest of eleven children; uncle Hamp Mapp was the oldest. Uncle Hamp had written a letter to his mother telling them about the rich soil in Oklahoma. He told them that all you had to do was put the seed in the ground and the cotton and corn would grow sky high. Said to come on up and help reap the harvest. Mom said they bundled up what they could carry and boarded the first train out of Paris, Texas to Saint Jo, Texas where they were met by Uncle Hamp and his wife Nora in their butcher knife wagon. Mom said this was a great experience for her - a 5 year old's first train ride. In later years, most of the Mapp clan settled in this general area. |
