Information provided by Bonnie Lewis Carroll: John Corbat Carroll left Georgia and moved to Bowie, Montague county, Texas with his mother and grandmother at the approximate age of 17. He started visiting people across the river in Leon, Love county, Oklahoma in 1916 and 1917 where he met my mother, Carrie Mapp. They were married June 3, 1917. The word was out that John would never get lost in those black river bottoms because he always had a mapp with him. The year after marriage they moved across the river at Rock Bluff and lived in a cave-like house and ran the ferry boat. The next year they moved back across the river to Oklahoma on the present homesite of Rip Ashcraft's home, better known in the old days as the Scroggins homesite. They lived there for a few years where my oldest brother Rayford was born. All the other children were born in this general area. Dr. Newberry of Leon, Oklahoma delivered us all into this world. Over the years, Dad ran a garage - worked on T-Model Fords up to the 1932 model cars then changed over to the grocery store business until 1945 when he moved to Oklahoma City where he later retired.
