Not one of our smartest ancestors. Worked in a sawmill. Cut one of his fingers off, stuck it in the glue pot then tied it back on his hand hoping that the finger would grow back. Got lockjaw and died.

James J Mapp and his family lived in Love's Valley near Marietta, Oklahoma. James had two daughters whom an Indian took an eye to and every time he'd drink he'd want to come out to the homestead and visit with the girls. James kept telling the Indian to leave his daughters alone - finally told him that if he didn't, he'd kill him. One night James and his wife came home after dark and found the house lit up, the doors open, and no one at home. Turns out the Indian had gotten drunk and come by to see the girls. They ran out of the house and hid in the woods. James went looking for the Indian and found him at a brush arbor church meeting where he shot him dead. James was tried at the Federal Court in Paris, Texas. Got off by reason of self defense - witnesses testified that the Indian had reached toward his back pocket and James thought he was going for his gun. James and his family continued to live in Love County, Oklahoma but moved after a couple of years because the community shunned them - apparently for killing the Indian at a church service. They moved to near Sentinel, Oklahoma and stayed a couple of years then moved back to the Marietta, Oklahoma area.
