Information from Bryce Hospital for Insane, Tuscaloosa, AL: Mrs. Mattie A. Mapp was first admitted to Bryce Hospital on 30 September 1886, at age twenty-four, and she was furloughed from the hospital on 4 January 1890. She was readmitted to Bryce on 1 November 1900. The family history reveals her father was William Elliott, farmer, who died at age sixty-seven of pneumonia. Her mother was Jane Dickson Elliott who died at age forty of inflammation of the stomach. Apparently, the family lived at New Hope, Madison County, Alabama. Mrs. Mapp had twelve brothers and sisters who lived to be grown and one to die in infancy. According to our records, Mrs. Mapp had one child to die. She also had a daughter, Addie Howard, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, who corresponded with the hospital occasionally. According to our records, Mrs. Mapp's husband filed a petition for divorce on 1 April 1915. A letter from Mrs. Howard indicates that Mr. Mapp died 15 May 1932, in Port, Oklahoma. Our records reveal that Mrs. Mapp died at Bryce Hospital on 12 June 1938, and a copy of the death certificate indicates the cause of death was cardiorenal disease and was seventy-eight years of age at the time of her death. She was buried in the Bryce Cemetery. According to family remembrances, sometime around 1923 the family received word that if someone would come get Mattie and give her a home and tender loving care, she could be released from the mental institution. No one could, or would, so Mattie had to stay there. She died in the Bryce Mental Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1938. She was 78 years old at the time and had been in the hospital a total of 42 years. Mattie was committed to the mental hospital when her only child, Addie, was 15 months old. That was the last time Addie saw her mother. Addie, her father George and grandmother Elizabeth Adeline then moved to Cooke county, Texas where George's brother William was living. After Addie grew up, married and had children, her daughter Gladys offered several times to take Addie back to Alabama to see her mother but Addie always declined. |
