Charley was the oldest son of Joseph and Nancy Ann. He always lived with Nancy Ann until her death in 1920. Charley was considered to be mentally challenged, probably due to a mishap a birth. As his caregiver, Nancy ann had to read and write for him. When Nancy registered him for the draft in World War I, she gave the reason he could not serve was because he was 'insane' and signed her name.
