Man Suicide After Shooting Woman Fatally

Youth, 16, Fails To Stop Tragedy at Downtown Hotel

In the second local murder and suicide within three days, Calvin V. (Boots) Jeffers, 61, former Paden, Okla., deputy sheriff, today shot Mrs. Gladys Pyland, about 50, also of Paden, in a downtown hotel room, and then turned the gun on himself, detectives reported.

Registered Monday
Jeffers, who previously had for some time lived with San Diego relatives, and Mrs. Pyland registered Monday night at the Twelfth ave. and Broadway hotel, Dets. Ben Eichbaum and P. K. Shea reported.
At 4:45 a.m. today; Jim Minos, 16, son of the landlady, told police he heard the couple arguing. He investigated and, upon entering the room, saw Jeffers pointing a .44-caliber pistol at the woman.
"He appeared to be crazy with rage," the youth said. "He didn't say anything -- just keep yelling."

One Shot Goes Wild
Jeffers fired one shot, which went wild, and young Minos attempted to wrest the gun from his hand. The man shook the youth off, however, and fired a second shot, which struck the woman in the throat.
Bleeding from the wound, Mrs. Pyland walked from the room, downstairs and outside to sit on a bench, where police, called immediately, found her.
Young Minos followed the woman downstairs. In a few moments he heard a third shot and ran back upstairs to Jeffers' room. There he saw Jeffers, sprawled on the floor, dying from a bullet wound in the head.

Rushed to Hospital
Ambulances rushed the pair to County hospital, where both died within a half-hour.
From an empty whisky bottle found on a dresser in the room, detectives deduced that the couple might have been intoxicated at the time of the tragedy. Young Minos, however, said that the woman appeared to be sober.
"I couldn't tell about the man," he said. "He seemed to be crazy, but I don't know whether he was drunk or not." Both were fully clothed, the youth said.

Daughter, Son Live Here
E. A. Turner, deputy coroner, said that local relatives of Jeffers included a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gray, of 3046 Colton St., and a son, Leon Jeffers, of 3858 Euclid ave.
Bodies of Jeffers and Mrs. Pyland were taken to the Ryan mortuary. Turner said no inquest is planned.
