Joane arrived in Isle of Wight Co, VA by 1642. That was the year she was llisted by John Sweete for Headright lands. Possibly same person as the Jane Pylande who married Dr. Gurganey of London, England. John Sweete, 650 acs, Nov. 11, 1642. Page 858, adjacent land of Mr. Cooper and Francis England. Trans. of 13 persons: Alexandria Piland, Joane Piland, John Barrow, William White, Richard Gisfry (or Giffry), Israell Andrews, John Marshall, William Henes (or Haves), himselfe and his wife, Charles Deratt, Randall Clarke, John Berry. Renewed 16 Sept. 1643 and 890 acs. added. (Cavaliers & Pioneers - Abstract of VA Land Patents and Grants 1623-1666. Nugent 755 NUG Vol. 1 p. 140.) Jane Gurganey, a widow of London, England, sold 250 acres in Warwick Co, VA on 27 Dec 1678 to James Hire, a merchant. This land had formerly belonged to her brother, Robert Pyland. (Lord Mayor's Court of London Depositions Relating to Americans, 1641-1736, Coldham, Peter W. - Washington; Nat'l Gen. Soc., 1980--pp. 56-57.) Susan Gibbs of St. Giles' Parish, London, widow, age 70, deposes at the request of John Gurgany, doctor of divinity, and his wife Jane, that the said Jane is the daughter of the deponents's brother Robert England, late of St. Clement Danes, London, butcher, and his only surviving child. Said Jane Gurgany is the same person whom the depondent's nephew, Robert England, deceased, late of Virginia, in his Will called his sister, Jane Michael in England. Rebecca Bateman of Shoreditch near London, widow, age 71, deposes that she is cousin to both father and son and attests to the truth of Susan Gibbs' deposition. Dated 20 Aug 1671. (Page 26, same source as above.) Dr. John Gurgany, of Bristol, England, may have been related to Francis England, the man who paid for James' and Alexandria's passage to America and claimed a Headright for them. The Gurganeys arrived in Virginia by 1616. They did not come as indentured servants, but paid their own passage. (Adventures of Purse and Person, Virginia H. Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, ed., {Order of the First Families of Virginia, 1607-1624/5, 1987} p. 355.) |
