(Benoni Stinson and The General Baptists - 1892):
"J. B. Pilant of the Missouri Association, was born March 21, 1858, in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Moved to Ohio in 1864. Thence to Kansas in 1867. Thence to southwestern Missouri in 1874. He was converted on the 30th of May, 1875, under the preaching of Rev. Thomas Norris, the Pioneer General Baptist preacher in those parts, and was baptized the first Sabbath in June of the same year, and joined Mt. Lebanon church, the pioneer church of the Association.
He was licensed Saturday before the first Sunday in September in 1877. Most of the time since, he has preached to three or four churches, with little or no remuneration, and has assisted in the organization of quite a number of churches, has preached about 1,000 sermons, has witnessed about 500 professions, has baptized about 150 persons, and married 40 couples - indicating a very active and successful ministry.
Bro. Pilant was a delegate to the twentieth General Association, at Corydon, Kentucky, and made a very favorable impression upon the brethren who met him there. He has also been twice elected to the Missouri Legislature - backslidden into it, we should say, were it not that in spite of it he has made such full proof of the ministry. We trust the craze of politices may never get hold of him. He is worthy of a place here he can "live of the gospel", and give his undivided energies to it."

Info from J. Michael Hillyard: J. B. was well known in his time. He was a very strict, opinionated individual, considered completely honest in his dealings and respected for his efforts. He was a Free Mason and a member of the Modern Woodsmen. He came and went in Gibson County, Indiana leaving few clues as to his travels.

He was a Minister.
