Obituary - The Coconino Sun newspaper, Flagstaff, AZ, Sunday, 28 Apr 1984:
[UND:]ELSIE PYLAND, 85[:UND]
Mrs. Elsie K. Pyland, 60-year resident of Flagstaff and widow of a prominent city businessman, died of cancer Friday in the Pines Care Center. She was 85. Mrs. Pyland had been a resident of the center for five weeks and prior to that had made her home for 18 months with family members. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, 10 a.m., in the chapel of Flagstaff Mortuary, 302 W. Oak Ave. Private interment will be in the family plot in Citizens Cemetery. Mrs. Pyland was born Feb. 17, 1899, in Doniphan, Mo., and, in 1919 in Alexandria, La., married Joe P. Pyland. The couple moved to Flagstaff in 1924 where Mr. Pyland, who died in 1962, was a railroad engineer for Cady Lumber Co., one forerunner of the present Southwest Forest Industries Inc. He later owned and operated for many years a downtown billiard room and bar, Joe's Place. Both Mr. and Mrs. Pyland were preceded in death by a daughter, Josine, who died in an automobile accident shortly after they moved to Flagstaff in 1924, and by a son John, who died in an electrical accident in 1942. Mrs. Pyland was a charter member of the First Baptist Church, and was a member of both the Order of Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge. She was a 45-year member of the Flagstaff Friday Bridge Club. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Martha Mulnix, Flagstaff; a brother, J. W. Brooks, Sedona; three grandchildren, Bill Adams, Phoenix, and Joe and Kathryn Mulnix, both Flagstaff; and several nieces and nephews living out of state.
