50th Wedding Anniversary To Be Celebrated: On Sunday afternoon Dec. 23 (1945) at their home, 2041 255th St., Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Finch, well known Lomita residents are holding open house in commemoration of their golden wedding anniversary. The fiftieth wedding anniversary of any couple always brings out interesting stories and reminences. In this case the story opens in LaMar County, Ala., Mr. Finch's birthplace. At the age of five years he with his parents migrated to Green County, Arkansas via ox team. The trip took weeks and many discomforts were endured. In Arkansas they bought a farm and settled down to the quiet hard life that all farmers of that era lived. Young Finch went to school in the winter time, not even the little red school house of song fame, but a still cruder one of logs, chinked with mud and benches instead of seats. As the years went on there was the fun of singing schools and socials. Also there was a girl schoolmate who was growing into a young lady of pleasing looks and personality. On Christmas day, 1895, she became Mrs. Finch and the young couple settled on their farm in the neighborhood they had grown up in. Seven children were born to them, who, as they became adults left Arkansas and came further west. Now with the exception of one son in the Navy who is stationed at Pasco, Washington, all are located in this vicinity and will be present at their parents' home on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Finch left Arkansas in 1935 and came to California, settling in Lomita soon after that time. Their children are Lloyd Finch of Torrance; Floyd and Adrian Finch and Mrs. Loren Clements of Wilmington; Mrs. Dena Davis of Harbor City; Mrs. John Davis of Lomita, and Boyd Finch, USN, of Pasco, Wash. There are sixteen grandchildren in the family and two great grandchildren. Both Mr. and Mrs. Finch are hale and hearty at the ages of 70 and 67 years. Mr. Finch spends his time in his yard and also reads a great deal. Mrs. Finch does all her own housework and needless to say is a housekeeper of the old school. Life in California among children and friends is good to them and it is the hope of all their friends and relatives that they celebrate many more wedding anniversaries. Death Calls E. W. Finch, Well Known Lomita Resident - Death came to Ethel Watson Finch of 2041 255th St., at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 27th (1946). Mr. Finch had been in poor health for some time but only during the last week of his life was he bedridden. Mr. and Mrs. Finch celebrated their golden wedding anniversary during the holiday season in December and at that time held open house for many old and new friends. Mr. Finch was a native of Alabama. While a young man he had come as far west as Arkansas, where he remained for twenty-five years. In 1934 (1935) he came out to California and has made his home in Lomita since that time. Of late years Mr. Finch has not been able to get around as freely as formerly and has spent much of his time reading. The Bible and magazines dealing with current events have been his favorite types of reading. He was of a quiet nature until a person really got to know him. Then the dry humor which characterized him made him loved and respected by all who knew him. All of his family were with him when he passed away and he will be keenly missed by his family as well as a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held at the Stone and Myers chapel at Torrance on Saturday, March 3rd. Rev. Paul Lomax of Lomita and Rev. Sacry of Long Beach officiated and interment was at Roosevelt Cemetery. Survivors include his wife who resides at the family home; daughters, Mrs. Dena Davis, Harbor City; Mrs. Loren Clements, Wilmington, and Mrs. John Davis of Lomita; sons, Floyd Finch of Wilmington; Lloyd Finch, Torrance; Adrian Finch of Wilmington and Boyd, who is in the U. S. Navy; two brothers, Oscar Finch of St. Louis and L. W. Finch of Arkansas; 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
