Merritt served with the Texas Rangers for periods between 1870 and 1876, and according to James Evetts Haley’s book, Charles Schreiner, General Merchandise: the story of a country store, he did some hunting and trapping. “A.W. Merritt, from off the head of the Nueces about 80 miles from Kerrville, came in the fall of 1873 with one hundred and eighty-six pounds of deer hides, three hams and thirty-five pounds of bear oil and honey. And he needed only fifteen cents
worth of rock salt, a box of matches and two quarts of whiskey to take home, and it is doubtful if he got home with all of that.”
