WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT DIES
DR. WILLIAM ERNEST (BILL) BATES, 93, one of the oldest surviving native-born Randolph Countians and one of its most well-known residents, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 at the Randolph County Medical Center. Dr. Bates was a retired veterinarian and cattle farmer. He was appointed to two terms by Gov. Bill Clinton to the Arkansas State Veterinarian Examing Board, served as president on the Randolph County Fair Association Board, president of the Randolph County Saddle club, member of the Pocahontas School Board and a member of the Northeast Arkansas Planning Club. Dr. Bates was the son of the late Daniel Vorhees Bates and Mary Lou Hancock Bates. Dr. Bates is survived by his wife, Dorothy Keith Bates; one adopted nephew, Gary D. Gazaway; one brother, Paul Dean Bates of Pine Bluff; and one sister, Hazel Shivley of Houston, Texas. Funeral services for Dr. Bates will be 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10, 1999 at First United Methodist Church, Pocahontas with Steve Wingo officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery, Pocahontas. Visitation will be Thursday (today) Sept. 9, 1999, 4 to 8 p.m. at McNabb Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers a memorial may be sent to First United Methodist Church.
