In 1918 Joseph Horry Spencer was discharged from the U. S. Army after serving in World War I. He fought battles in France and Belgium, the same general area where about 25 years later his son-in-law, William D. Souder of Hurst, Texas, served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Soon after being discharged, Horry as he was called, made a trip from his family's farm in Chester county, Tennessee to Ranger, Texas to investigate an oil well drilling company in whose stock he had invested. Upon learning that the stock was worthless, he remained in Texas working as a carpet salesman for Ellison's Furniture Company in Fort Worth. He met Laura Belle Baker who was working for the telephone company in Fort Worth after attending Bowie Commercial College in her hometown of Bowie, Texas. They were married 18 May 1920 in Fort Worth, Texas. (Written by M. G. Jerry Spencer) |
