(Avinger Citizen, Historical Edition 1954, page 24) PYLAND COMMUNITY BOASTS OLD HOMES - Four miles south of Avinger on highway 49 are the two impressive Pyland homes and the Pyland cemetery. On the left going south is the Rep Pyland home and across from it the old Harvey Pyland home. The Jim Pyland home was located off of the highway, a mile or so to the east. These three brothers, sons of John Pyland, the original ancestor to come to Texas, married three Reeder sisters, as follows: Jim m. Emma, Rep m. Lillie, and Harvey m. Lake. The three wives were sisters of the Rev. Jim Reeder of Hughes Springs. Immediate descendants of the Harvey Pylands are: Earl; Mrs. Horace (Pearl) Bennett; Raymond; Joe Bailey, of Jefferson; Mrs. Buddy (Jewell) Gilbert of Avinger and Mrs. Jack (Valley) Dorgan, also of Rt. 2, Avinger. Many former Lassaterites, the next community south on highway 49, are buried in the old Pyland cemetery which was established in 1877. Among them are the Lassaters, Lands, Findleys and McCaslinds.
