History of Randolph County, Arkansas - Regina Cook:

PENN, NANCY PYLAND One of the very oldest families of Randolph County is the Penn family. The history of Nancy Pyland Penn, dates back to the early 1800's. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1820, Nancy Pyland was wed to William Riley Penn, at Nashville in 1839. To this union five sons and a daughter were born: Jasper B. Penn, 1840; James F. Penn, 1842; Charles H. Penn, 1844 (father of Milas Penn of Noland); Katie M. Penn (later Lemmons), 1846; William Riley Penn, Jr., 1849.

She and her family, together with other Penn's and their families, came to Arkansas in the early 1850's - most of the Penn's settling at Strawberry and other small villages in Lawrence County. She and her family came to Randolph County and settled at or near Old Davidsonville, on Deer Creek, later Gwin Creek, now Noland. She and her husband were among the first Christians to attend church at Carter Creek, in 1852 to 1857, when the church disbanded at Carter Creek, and began to worship at Hubble Creek in 1857. She was one of the most devoted Christians in the congregation, always helping those who needed help, caring for and helping the sick and aiding them financially when needed.

Shortly after coming to Randolph County, her husband passed away, and Mrs. Penn married General Cartwright. To this union was born two children, George Washington Cartwright and Mattie Cartwright. Some fifteen years later, General Cartwright died, leaving her with two children to support. In those days times were hard, but she managed to provide a living for her family.

Shortly after visiting her relatives, the Higginbothams, Streets, and other friends in Sharp County, she passed away at the home of a daughter, Mattie Rose, in 1894. She was laid to rest in Chesser Cemetery.
