Branson was unmarried and living with his brother, Britton Pyland, in Perry County, TN in 1860, according to the census for that year.

Civil War: Private, Company G, 48th (Voorhies') Tennessee Infantry, Confederate Army.

Served in a Hickman County, Tennessee unit in the Civil War (see Spence's History of Hickman County, Tennessee). W. C. Wyatt Jr, oldest son of William Carroll Wyatt, told that Branson Pyland was the tallest soldier in the Confederate Army. They were in the same Confederate unit and were on their way to Shiloh when they were apprehended. They never made it to that battle.
