According to family tradition: During the Civil War, Samuel James Pyland was out working in the fields one day and never came home in the evening. No one ever heard from him again. Samuel was a private in Company B, Davies' Battalion, Missouri Calvary, CSA. He was captured and died in a Federal prison camp in St. Louis, Missouri. He is buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri: grave #4639. Samuel James Pyland listed in a book, "Confederate Roll of Honor: Missouri": S. J. Pyland, 4th Missouri Calvary, died of disease on 30 Nov 1864, prisoner of war at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. |
