Article written by Lyda Milam Davidson: PENN, JASPER BRITTIAN - Jasper Brittian Penn was born 07 March 1841, in Tennessee to William Riley and (Mary) Nancy (Pyland) Penn. He married first Sarah M. Carter in 1860. They had one child, Sarah M. 'Babe' Penn. It appears he married second to Jane Nations in 1866. No children. On 23 June 1867, he married Sarah Emmaline Lemmons, daughter of John M., II and Barbara (Thompson) Lemmons. Sarah Emmaline was born about 1846-1847 in Iowa and is buried in the Lemmons Cemetery. Jasper and Sarah E. had at least eight children: (1) Barbara Emmaline Penn, born 17 September 1868, married Solomon S. Mack 14 November 1886, died 25 February 1924, burial at Brockett Cemetery. Their children: Carrie, Margaret, Annie, George, Aaron, Ethel, John, Ewel, Claris, and Silas. (2) William Penn, born about 1869-1870, died between 1870-1880 census. (3) Richard Franklin Penn, born September 1872, married Emma Bell Price. Children: Almus, Ollie, Ethel, and Lottie. (4) Liley Ann Francis Penn, born about 1875, married Elmer Taylor. Their children: Clarence, Bertha, Lela, Emmaline, Recie, Willie, Claude, and Luther. (5) Charles Newton Penn, born March 1877, married Ada Large. Their children: Raymond, Harry, Ora, Cullen, Curtis, Walter, and a baby that died. (6) Pelanie Eva Penn, born November 1879, married Tom Landis. Their children: Arvil, Arlo, Hubert, Cecil, Nema, Jay and Dorothy. (8) James Alexander Penn, born April 1884, married Lucinda M. Foust. Their children: Jess, Ralph, Thurman and Faye. Both Newton and James are buried in Overby Cemetery. Jasper married Mary Fannie Roberts after the death of Sarah Emmaline. Jasper and Mary Fannie married in 1898. They had at least two children: (1) Nora M. Penn, born April 1900. Apparently she died young. (2) Gracie J. Penn, born about 1902. Gracie married Vernie Harper. They had one child, Mae Penn. Gracie died when Mae was very small. Vernie remarried and Mae was adopted by Roger and Ida Harris. Mae first married a Jacobs and had Tommy and Phyllis Jean. She later married Bill Melton and had Gracie. Jasper was in the Civil War, Company E, Reeves Regiment, Arkansas Calvary, May 1864 - 05 June 1865. Jasper lived near Hubble Creek in the Noland Community. He later moved near the Stokes, Brockett Communities. He carried mail by horseback. He was also a farmer. Family legend has it that during his time in the army, Jasper would let his bread mold before he would eat it. In this way he was the only one in his regiment that didn't get sick. Jasper entertained the grandchildren and great-grandchildren by telling them stories of the Civil War. He died 16 November 1925 and is buried in the Brockett Cemetery. |
